Leggings (from the French. Guêtre) are false or bootleg kind of warm stockings worn over shoes. The first leg warmers, invented in the Middle Ages to protect the legs of war, made of leather and cloth, and a model of wool, velvet and silk appeared much later. In Russia, this garment came into use in the late 19th century.

Modern leggings can be worn over or under the shoe. They are not just women's accessories, but also part of fitness. For example, the players put them on top of special shields to protect their feet from the blows. Leggings made from membrane fabrics are used by tourists as a protection against water and dirt inside the boots. Women use this piece of clothing in everyday life as well as accessories to quickly warm up the muscles of the legs to dance or aerobics classes.
