The project entitled Unifold, developed one of the leading designers design institutes in the United States, introduced the world to the first model of the shoe, which is obtained on the basis of origami. Horatio Yuksin Khan and Kevin Crowley Unifold invented as a means to simplify the process of making shoes, save on transportation and its content. Origami meets all these requirements.
Carved Unifold ballerina slippers, like espadrilles are made, of course, not of paper. The material from which the eventually formed footwear, consisting of a mixture of ethylene and vinyl acetate, which makes shoes quite durable. In this case, it does not need to stick together and otherwise treated like regular shoes. Enough to cut a stencil and fold. Accordingly, the pair with the same ease you can "understand", put in a suitcase while traveling or delivery to the buyer and thus save space in your luggage. All this greatly reduces the cost of the product.
Khan and Crowley also hope that with the help of origami shoes they will help a lot of people from poor countries, where residents do not have enough money for normal shoes, and they are forced to walk barefoot, which often leads to dangerous diseases. By the way, and people with money Unifold may come to mind for its originality and minimalistic.
